It turns out that the stuff we have been encouraged to do for years, give open and honest feedback, doesn't actually work and more than that can actually reduce the motivation and effectiveness off the person on the receiving end.

This is not opinion. It is science and the science is saying that a lot of people are wasting a lot of money building feedback into their businesses.

Feedback makes the recipient defensive and inhibits their ability to learn.

The answer?

Reinforce the positives. Single out and praise good work, good opinions and positive contributions.

We humans do not do well when someone whose intentions are unclear tells us where we stand, how good we “really” are, and what we must do to fix ourselves. We excel only when people who know us and care about us tell us what they experience and what they feel, and in particular when they see something within us that really works.
